Julia Dean Self (b. 23 Jun 1865, prob. Marion Co., AL; d. 31 May 1953, Williamson Co., TX; pb: Pearl Cemetery, Coryell Co., TX). This photo appears to have been taken in the 1920s or 30s.
Submitted by Cousin Scott who writes:
My best theory at the moment is that "July" (pronounced "Julie"), as she was called, was the youngest child of Emeriah Self (1816-1865) and Frances "Fanny" Burleson Self (c.1822-a.1903), but I am far from 100% certain; maybe 75%. There still is the huge unanswered question of why she does not appear with Fanny Burleson Self in the 1870 census. But other evidence points in the direction of this parentage. She married my great-grandfather (his second wife), Joseph Newton Chafin (1848-1934), probably in Marion Co., AL, probably in 1881; I've found no record of the marriage, but courthouse fires probably account for that. They had nine children; the seventh was my grandfather, James L Medie Chafin (1896-1958). They arrived in Texas in the late 1890s and ultimately settled in Pearl, Coryell Co. Both Joseph and Julia are buried there. I would be interested in comparing her appearance with any other of the known children of Emeriah Self.
