John Self married Mary Westgate in Carleton Rode, Norfolk, England in 1806. Their son John, born in 1808 and died about 1840, married Martha Long in 1827. The line the goes to John, b. 1829; Edwin, b. 1857; and Thomas Edwin, born 1888. Cousin Gordon would like to find his ancestors in Norfolk, England before 1806. Although there are links to Wiltshire, this line is a different branch of Selfs. If anyone can supply information, please contact Webmaster.
Arthur Ernest Self left Norfolk, England and came to the USA. His brother, Alfred Brasnett Self, then followed his brother, met him briefly in East Hampton on Long Island, and remained in the USA at least from July 1890 to August 1891. He then returned home to England. Arthur Self may also have gone back to England. He married Milly Torbell--on which continent is still uncertain--and had children Muriel, Gladys, Ernest Arthur, Phyllis, and Jack. If anyone is familiar with these names or could suggest sources to further research these two brothers, please contact Webmaster.

Cousin Ellen writes: I'm hoping that someone on your list might be able to help me trace a SELF relative in Suffolk, England. NAME of the SELF Relative: Wallis William SELF. COUNTY/PARISH: According to 1871 & 1881 census, Wallis was born in Palgrave, Suffolk. He is listed in the census of 1871 and 1881 as a nephew of my great-grandfather, Benjamin CLARKE of Palgrave. DATE OF BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH: The census records indicate that Wallis would have been born around 1862. However, I have not been able to find his birth in the index of civil registrations. Wallis married Florence COBB in Palgrave in 1882. His marriage certificate states that his father's name was Wallis RASBINE. (Was he perhaps born out of wedlock to a woman whose surname was SELF?). At the time of the 1891 census, Wallis and his wife Florence were living in Palgrave, and had a daughter Florence. Wallis died in Palgrave at the age of 42 in 1904. That is literally all I know about Wallis William SELF. MY QUESTION: Although Wallis William SELF is listed as a nephew of my great-grandfather, I was not aware of any other SELFs in the family until I found Wallis. I have little information about my great-grandparents and thought tracing Wallis might lead me to another line of the family. Any information about Wallis and/or his family would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Webmaster and Cousin Ellen.

Cousin Jenny writes: I am researching Thomas Self(e) who was a butcher and was born in Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire. According to the family bible he was born 5th November 1798. He was transported to Tasmania as a convict on 9th March 1822 for stealing a pair of boots and spurs. I have found 3 candidates for his parents in the Wiltshire baptism records, but none of the dates fit very well. The first is James and Elizabeth Dawkins, the 2nd John and another Elizabeth and the 3rd William and Betty. It seems he left behind a daughter called Eliza, and married twice in Australia (both times to convict women). The first wife was Mary MacDonald and the 2nd to Mrs Elizabeth Capel (formerly Beardshawe or Beecher). I am descended from the second wife. If I can get in touch with anyone who may be related, I would be thrilled. Please contact Cousin Jenny and cc Webmaster.
